If you’re a writer, then you probably know that story ideas don’t come from a scheduled brainstorming session—they pop up when you’re doing the most random things. I’m no exception. Whether I’m sipping coffee on my balcony or scrolling through the news, my mind is always crafting stories, turning everyday moments into plot twists and character arcs.
Yes, it means I’m a little nutty. (Aren’t all writers, though?) But it’s a habit that feeds my creativity. I’m constantly daydreaming about what could happen if one decision led to something entirely unexpected. I see possibilities in every headline or overheard conversation, and soon, a story starts to form.
Take the YA cartel series I’m developing now, for instance. The idea struck me like lightning when I read about a horrifying incident in neighboring Zapopan last year—eight people murdered for trying to quit their jobs at a call center. Imagine that. You’re trying to leave a job, and instead of a farewell party or some casual goodbyes, you’re met with violence and terror.
It was brutal, haunting, and exactly the kind of plotline that sticks with you. The seeds of a series were planted right there. That story became a dark, rich well for characters, motivations, and a dangerous world where leaving your job might mean leaving your life behind. You can read the details about the tragic murders here.
If you can’t tell, I love living in Mexico, but the reality of cartels can’t be ignored. Normally I stick to writing romance novels because they’re so much fun to write. But again, the plot to a YA novel took hold, and I’ve decided to see it rhough to the end. If you’re one of my romance readers, don’t worry, I am continuing to write them, but I’ve decided to make the writing of the YA novel a series here on my blog.
Choosing The Title
Every great story needs a great title, and for me, the title is where the planning truly begins. It’s the first spark that brings everything together. The title sets the tone, hints at the central conflict, and gives me a creative anchor to build from. It’s one of the most exciting parts of the process because it distills the entire story into just a few words.
When I sat down to brainstorm this new cartel series, I knew the title needed to capture the intensity of the setting, the danger of the situation, and the impossible choices the characters would face. I wanted something gritty and suspenseful, something that would make readers think, This is going to be a wild ride.
I played around with a few options before landing on something that felt right. Here’s a peek at my brainstorming process for titles:
Call of the Cartel
Deadly Connections
Hang Up to Die
Escape the Line
No Way to Quit
Silent Signals
Lines of Blood
Click or Kill
All of these reflect the tension between an ordinary job and the life-or-death stakes the characters will face. But one title really jumped out at me as I thought more about the call center setting and the brutal consequences of trying to leave: Dialing Or Death. It’s direct, punchy, and sums up the stakes in just three words.
So, for now, the working title is Dialing Or Death. It might change as the series develops, but this one has a grip on me. If you have an idea for a great title, I’d love to hear it! You can email me at ianolewis@cruz-publishing.com.
With a title in place, the story starts to take shape. It’s like having a map to guide me through the creative process, grounding the wild ideas that constantly swirl around in my head. From the moment I saw that news story about the call center murders in Zapopan, I knew I had the seed of something powerful. Now, with Dialing Or Death as my working title, the series is starting to feel real.
But we’ve only just scratched the surface. Next week, I’m diving into one of the most critical parts of the process—the blurb. As far as I’m concerned, the blurb is almost as important as the outline. It’s not just a summary; it’s the promise of the story, the hook that pulls readers in and keeps them wanting more. Getting it right is key to crafting a compelling book.
So, join me next week as I walk you through how I write blurbs that capture the essence of the story, without giving everything away. Trust me, you won’t want to miss this!
In the ever-evolving landscape of literature, incorporating current events into fiction offers a unique way to enrich storytelling. It allows authors to create narratives that resonate deeply with readers by weaving in elements of the world they live in. In this post, I’ll explore why and how current events can enhance fiction, using my upcoming novel Breaking The Ice by my pen name Tessa Vidal as a case study.
Why Incorporate Current Events?
Integrating current events into fiction isn’t just about mirroring reality; it’s about creating stories that feel immediate and relevant. By grounding your narrative in real-world events, you can engage readers on a more profound level, sparking conversations and connections that go beyond the page.
Be Careful!
The one real drawback to incorporating current events into a story is you end up dating yourself, which can shorten the shelf-life of your book. Because of this you should always be careful to pick current events that are also evergreen topics. For example, in my current work in progress I’m using a political setting without engaging in specific events that happened in real life. Politics is evergreen, meaning it’s almost always current, but if I wrote about the actual election of 2024 between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, the book would be dated almost immediately after the conclusion of the presidential race.
Balancing Accuracy and Creativity
While using current events can add depth to your story, it’s crucial to balance accuracy with creativity. Extensive research is essential to ensure a respectful and accurate portrayal. However, fiction allows for flexibility—use real events as a backdrop while crafting fictional elements to suit your narrative.
Crafting Characters and Plotlines
Current events can significantly influence character development and plot progression. Characters’ reactions to these events can reflect real-world perspectives and add layers of authenticity to their motivations and conflicts. For example, in Breaking The Ice, the fictional “Vision 2025 Coalition” is inspired by Project 2025, highlighting the tensions surrounding environmental policies. The antagonist, Victor Blackwood, embodies the morally ambiguous tactics often seen in contemporary politics, drawing loose inspiration from figures like Roger Stone.
Case Study: Breaking The Ice
In Breaking The Ice, the “Vision 2025 Coalition” is a critical plot device. This fictional organization is modeled after Project 2025, a real-world initiative with controversial implications. By adapting this concept, I’ve created a compelling antagonist, Victor Blackwood, whose lobbying efforts for off-shore drilling present a formidable challenge for the protagonist, Representative Ellie Thompson.
Victor’s character is loosely based on Donald Trump ally Roger Stone, reflecting the cunning and controversial nature of some political figures. His blackmail tactics—using Ellie’s secret as leverage—introduce a moral dilemma that deepens the story’s conflict. This approach not only provides a gripping narrative but also mirrors real-world political drama, enhancing the story’s relevance and impact.
Enhancing Reader Engagement
By incorporating current events, you invite readers to engage with your story on a personal level. It stimulates discussion and encourages readers to reflect on contemporary issues through the lens of fiction. This connection can make your story more impactful and memorable.
Conclusion
Incorporating current events into fiction offers a powerful tool for creating engaging, relevant, and thought-provoking narratives. By blending real-world elements with creative storytelling, you can craft stories that resonate deeply with readers and spark meaningful conversations. I encourage fellow writers to explore this approach, balancing creativity with reality to enhance their storytelling.
Have you used current events in your writing? If you’re not a writer, are you ever drawn to books about current events? If so, share your experience in the comments below. Happy Reading!

I’m excited to share the journey of writing my second novel, ‘Serve,’ which holds a special place in my heart. As a huge tennis fan, drawing inspiration from my favorite players, Roger Federer and Carlos Alcaraz, was a dream come true. ‘Serve’ was a labor of love, born from my passion for the sport and my desire to tell a compelling MM romance story. Let’s dive into how this book came to life!
The Inspiration Behind ‘Serve’
‘Serve’ was my second novel, and it was a bit of a struggle to write as I was still learning the craft. Now, with over two dozen novels published, writing has become much easier. The main character, Tyler Florman, was inspired by none other than the legendary Roger Federer. His grace, talent, and poise on the court were qualities I wanted to imbue in Tyler. And, I have always had a huge crush on him.
The Blurb
Here’s a little taste of ‘Serve’:
No More Secrets
Everything Tennis champion Tyler Florman touches turns to gold. Winning is easy, but fame comes with a price. Living in the closet in exchange for riches and honors was second nature, until he met the younger man who conquered his heart.
Chip Carter has turned a childhood trauma into a career saving lives. As an EMT, he’s never found time for love, but all of that could be about to change when he rescues the famous, older athlete who steals his heart for the very first time.
Avoiding love is second nature for both men, until they meet that special someone worth fighting for. The odds against Chip and Tyler look insurmountable. But can Tyler leave the safety of the closet, and win Chip’s love at the same time?
Welcome to Hidden Creek, Texas, where the heart knows what it wants, and where true love lives happily ever after. Every Men of Hidden Creek novel can be read on its own, but keep an eye out for familiar faces around town! This book contains an eccentric blue-haired aunt, a spurned blackmailer, and a whole lot of balls.
The Struggle and Triumph
Writing ‘Serve’ was a challenging yet rewarding experience. I was still honing my skills as a writer, and every page felt like a new learning opportunity. There were moments of doubt and frustration, but my love for the characters and their story kept me going. Tyler and Chip’s journey from avoiding love to finding it in each other was a powerful narrative that I was determined to tell.
Learning the Craft
Over the years, with each novel I’ve written, my process has evolved. Writing has become more intuitive, and I’ve gained confidence in my storytelling abilities. ‘Serve’ was a pivotal moment in my career, teaching me the importance of perseverance and passion.
What’s Next?
I’m excited to continue exploring new stories and characters. Each book is a new adventure, and I can’t wait to share more with you all. Thank you for being a part of this journey with me! I’m currently working on the second book in the Burning Hearts series, Electric.
Stay tuned for more updates and behind-the-scenes looks into my upcoming projects. Your support and enthusiasm mean the world to me. To preorder Electric, click here and you’ll be taken to your favorite online bookstore.
Oh, and in case you were wondering, the novel Serve has a unique book cover on Amazon, since it was originally part of an exclusive Amazon series. To read Serve, you can purchase it from Apple Books, Google Play, Kobo, Barnes & Noble, Smashwords, and Amazon.
As writers, we often focus on plot, character development, and dialogue, sometimes overlooking the subtle layers that add depth to our narratives. One of these layers is symbolism, a powerful tool that enriches our stories and resonates with readers on a deeper level.
Interestingly, many of us incorporate symbolism subconsciously, drawn to certain images or motifs without fully understanding their significance until later. This realization dawned on me recently, prompting a reflection on my own use of symbolism in my novels.
Symbolism in “The Big Day”
In my novel The Big Day, I used grackles as a symbol of Mexico, embodying both the beauty and the challenges of the country. The grackles, often seen as common and even troublesome birds, represent the resilient spirit and vibrant life of Mexico. Here’s a snippet from the final chapter that demonstrates this symbolism:
“Sergio, when the service is over, the bird man will release the doves from their cage. All you need to do is aim the camera toward them, flying into the sky.” I moved the camera arm to show him how to do it. “Can you handle that?”
“Yes, sir.” Sergio nodded gravely, then a smile split his face. “Congratulations.”
“Thanks.” I strolled up to the little stage and stepped up. Sofia beamed at me, then she cleared her throat. I turned around to see Ram coming out of the house.
“Sergio, hit the start button on the camera.” I said, then I felt like I was about to have a heart attack. Ram strode toward me, his strides full of confidence. His white tuxedo with the scarlet bowtie set off his dark looks perfectly.
“You are a dream come true,” I breathed. Ram was so handsome, so perfect in every way. I couldn’t believe that this was my husband-to-be.
He stepped onto the stage and stood next to me. We stared at each other, taking in the moment and all its significance. Ram took my hands in his own, squeezing them tightly as if to reassure himself that he wasn’t dreaming.
“Manolo,” he breathed, his gaze never leaving mine. “You are stunning.”
I felt my cheeks flush at his words and I smiled shyly back at him. He’d chosen an elegant black tux for me to wear, and I felt like I was in a classic movie from the 1950s.
“Gentlemen, are you ready?” Sofia asked, then I noticed the light. The sun was setting soon, and we had to get married now for the camera.
“Sergio, start filming.” I called over my shoulder. “Please, begin the service, Sofia.”
“No music?” She lifted a brow.
“No, I’ll edit some in before we post it on social media.” I shrugged, and Ram swallowed. “We don’t have to post it if you don’t want me to.”
“I want to shout it from the rooftops, Manolo.” Ram looked to the sky, then back at me. “Make this the best wedding video the world has ever seen.”
Sofia cleared her throat, then began the service. “Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to celebrate the union of two souls, Ram and Manolo, in the sacred bond of marriage.” A crowd of people gathered around, mostly security guards and the other workers Hugo hired.
“Your love and commitment to each other have brought you to this beautiful moment, and it is an honor for me to officiate this ceremony.” Sofia’s brown eyes glittered. “Marriage is a journey of joy, growth, and unwavering support. It’s about sharing life’s triumphs and challenges, holding each other through laughter and tears.”
Ram sniffed, and I fought to keep my tears at bay.
“Today, you pledge your love to one another, promising to be true partners, friends, and companions in this life and beyond.” Sofia opened her hands and tilted her head. “Now, as a symbol of your unity, please exchange your vows.”
We’d only had a few minutes to write them down, and I hoped they sounded good on film.
“Manolo, you are my light, my rock, and my heart’s home. With you, I am complete. I promise to love you unconditionally, to stand by you through thick and thin, and to cherish every moment we share.” A tear slid down the side of Ram’s nose. “Go on, it’s your turn, Manolo.”
“Ram, you are my greatest blessing. You bring joy and laughter to my life every day. I promise to support you, to be your confidant and your partner, and to love you fiercely until the end of time.” My voice sounded so thick in my ears.
“In the presence of your loved ones and all those gathered here, do you, Ram, take Manolo to be your husband, to love and cherish him for all the days of your life?” Sofia nodded toward Ram.
“Yes, I will.”
“And do you, Manolo, take Ram to be your husband, to love and cherish him for all the days of your life?”
“Yes, always.” I felt hot tears pouring down my cheeks.
“By the power vested in me and the love that surrounds us, I now pronounce you husbands. You may seal your love with a kiss.” Sofia stepped back. Then Ram took my hands and pulled me into his arms.
“I love you now and forever, Manolo Castro.” Ram whispered, then his soft lips pressed against mine. This was our love, our truth, and I felt like my heart was about to burst inside my chest.
“¡Los pájaros, amigo, ¡suelta los pájaros!” I heard a man’s voice in the background ordering the birds to be released. A fluttering sound filled the air, and Ram and I stepped apart to see the sight.
“It’s so beautiful.” Ram sighed, throwing his arm over my shoulder. “Just like you.”
The doves circled the yard, their stunning white feathers glowing orange in the light of the setting sun.
“Oh no,” Ram pointed toward the edge of the yard. “The bandit birds are coming for them!”
“Poor things.” I shook my head as the grackles chased the doves away. Apparently, this was their territory, and no peace-loving doves were allowed. I heard a man laugh and realized it was Sergio, who was filming the whole thing. A few of the doves tried to land, but the grackles weren’t having it. This was their house, and they merely tolerated us. If the grackles had their way, we wouldn’t be here either.
“We now have the rest of our lives to look forward to.” Ram smiled, and the sky turned a pinkish purple as the sun set. “I love you so much, Manolo.”
“And I love you more.”
In this scene, the grackles assert their dominance over the doves, symbolizing the complex, often harsh reality of life in Mexico. The contrast between the peaceful doves and the assertive grackles reflects the dynamic, vibrant, and sometimes challenging nature of the country.
Embracing Symbolism in Writing
Symbolism can be a conscious choice or an intuitive one, but recognizing and embracing it can elevate our storytelling. It allows readers to connect with the narrative on a deeper level, finding meaning beyond the surface plot. Whether it’s a recurring image, a significant color, or an animal that represents a broader theme, symbolism enriches the reader’s experience and adds layers of complexity to our work.
As writers, we should remain open to the symbols that naturally emerge in our stories. They often hold the key to deeper insights and emotional resonance, making our narratives more compelling and memorable.

If you’re a fan of classic romantic comedies, you might remember the delightful 1941 film “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Yes, you read that right—Hitchcock, the master of suspense, took a surprising detour into the world of screwball comedy with this gem starring Carole Lombard and Robert Montgomery. The story of a couple who discover their marriage isn’t legally valid struck a chord with me and inspired my novel, “Suddenly Single.”
In “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” the comedic chaos that ensues after the couple learns their marriage certificate is a dud provides the perfect blend of humor and heart. The movie’s playful take on love, commitment, and the trials of marital life got me thinking about the concept of sudden singleness and its impact on relationships.
That’s where the idea for “Suddenly Single” came from. I wanted to explore what happens when life throws an unexpected curveball at a seemingly stable couple. The novel delves into the lives of Asher Bartholomew Yates and Carter Camden Yates, who must navigate the emotional rollercoaster of discovering they aren’t legally married and the personal growth that comes from such a revelation.
Asher comes from one of the first families of Virginia and has just made partner in the family law firm. He went to the right schools, belongs to the right clubs, and like his peers, is happily married—most of the time. The love of his life, Carter, is a handful on the best of days, but Carter’s unwavering devotion and unpredictable antics ensure he will always have Asher’s heart.
Carter is the most successful interior designer in Richmond and is married to an up-and-coming lawyer who looks perfect on his arm. His talents are as colorful as his personality, and he’s the star of any room he enters. He loves Asher more than life itself and hasn’t once regretted getting married.
Out of the blue, a legal mixup jeopardizes everything. After three years of ups and downs, the couple discovers they’re not legally wed. Will this bombshell tear them apart, or will true love win once and for all?
Adding to the chaos is their crazy family: an alcoholic mother, a deranged maid, and a stoner old lady, who all bring their own flavor of drama and humor to the mix. Carter’s theatrical reactions and Asher’s attempts to maintain sanity create a whirlwind of laughs and touching moments.
“Suddenly Single” is the third book in the Southern Discomfort series. It is a gay romantic comedy filled with sweet tea and sour words, served alongside men discovering their deepest desires. This novel has it all: a couple on the rocks, a second chance at happiness, and a love that refuses to die. So relax on your porch swing with a mint julep and a slice of pecan pie, and enjoy the journey to true love.
When we talk about “bears” in the LGBTQ+ community, we’re not referring to the woodland creatures but rather a unique and vibrant subculture within the gay community. The term “gay bear” describes larger, often hairy gay men who embrace and celebrate body positivity and masculinity. Let’s delve into the origins, significance, and social impact of this identity.
Origins of the Bear Identity
The concept of the “bear” as a gay identity dates back to a 1979 article in The Advocate, a prominent LGBTQ+ magazine. This article categorized gay men based on their appearance, and from this, the bear identity began to take shape. Over the years, bears gained traction and evolved into a celebrated part of the LGBTQ+ community, representing a departure from stereotypical notions of male attractiveness.
Embracing Body Positivity
A core aspect of the bear identity is the celebration of body types that fall outside conventional standards of male beauty. Bears promote self-love and acceptance, encouraging individuals to embrace their natural bodies. This message of body positivity is crucial in a society that often pressures people to conform to unrealistic physical ideals. For me, this is my favorite thing about a cuddly bear. Not everyone is a skinny twink who you can barely recognize because of all the filters they use on social media posts. And FYI, I’m a bear admirer, not an actual bear. I’m too skinny, but I have been called an otter on multiple occasions! An otter is a thinner version of a hairy bear in case you were wondering.
Building a Strong Community
The bear community is known for its inclusivity and sense of belonging. There are bear-specific bars, clubs, social groups, and even annual events like bear Prides, where members of the community come together to celebrate their identity. These spaces provide a safe and welcoming environment for bears to express themselves and connect with others who share similar experiences and values.
Social Media Trends
On social media, the bear identity is often highlighted for its positive attributes, including:
Confidence: Bears are admired for their self-assuredness and comfort in their own skin. This confidence is seen as highly attractive and inspiring.
Masculinity: Bears challenge traditional beauty standards by representing a different kind of masculine appeal, one that values authenticity over conventional aesthetics.
Community: The strong sense of belonging and acceptance within the bear community is often showcased, emphasizing the supportive and tight-knit nature of this group.
It’s important to note that social media trends can sometimes be lighthearted and generalized. However, the core message remains clear: the bear community is a testament to the power of body positivity and the celebration of diverse forms of masculinity within the LGBTQ+ community.
Conclusion
The bear identity within the LGBTQ+ community is a powerful example of how diversity and acceptance can create a vibrant and supportive subculture. By embracing body positivity and redefining masculinity, bears challenge societal norms and inspire others to do the same. Whether through social media trends or real-life community events, the bear identity continues to make a significant impact, reminding us all of the importance of self-love and acceptance. Astrological Archetypes: Crafting Characters with Zodiac Precision
Before I begin, I want to clarify something. I actually don’t believe in astrology, but I’ve found it to be extremely useful when I’m creating characters. Oh, and in case you’re wondering, I’m a libra. We don’t believe anything, lol.
Creating memorable and multi-dimensional characters is a vital aspect of storytelling. One unique and effective method is to use astrology to develop your characters. Astrology offers a rich tapestry of traits, motivations, and archetypes that can bring depth and realism to your narrative. Here’s how you can use astrological signs to shape your characters and make them resonate with readers.
Understanding Zodiac Archetypes
The zodiac comprises twelve signs, each with distinct characteristics and personality traits. These signs are divided into four elements—Fire, Earth, Air, and Water—each element representing different fundamental qualities. Here’s a brief overview:
Fire Signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): These characters are passionate, dynamic, and often impulsive. They can be leaders, adventurers, or creatives, driven by enthusiasm and a desire for action.
Earth Signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): Grounded and practical, Earth signs are reliable and detail-oriented. They make great planners, workers, and providers, often seeking stability and material success.
Air Signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): Intellectual and communicative, Air signs are curious and sociable. They thrive on ideas, conversation, and social interactions, often serving as mediators, thinkers, or innovators.
Water Signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): Emotional and intuitive, Water signs are deeply connected to their feelings and those of others. They excel in roles requiring empathy and imagination, such as caretakers, artists, and healers.
Building Characters with Zodiac Signs
Aries (March 21 – April 19): An Aries character is bold, confident, and always up for a challenge. They might be a fearless leader, a competitive athlete, or an entrepreneur starting a new venture. Their impulsive nature can lead to conflicts, but their courage and determination are unmatched.
Taurus (April 20 – May 20): Taurus characters are dependable, patient, and have a love for beauty and comfort. They could be a chef, an artist, or a financial advisor. While they are incredibly loyal, their stubbornness can be a source of tension.
Gemini (May 21 – June 20): Gemini characters are adaptable, witty, and curious. They make excellent journalists, teachers, or entertainers. Their dual nature allows them to see multiple perspectives, though they can sometimes come off as indecisive or superficial.
Cancer (June 21 – July 22): Cancers are nurturing, sensitive, and protective. They might be a devoted parent, a nurse, or a counselor. Their deep emotional insights make them empathetic, but their tendency to retreat into their shell can be a challenge. In my upcoming novel Ignited, Finn McKenna is a Cancer!
Leo (July 23 – August 22): Leo characters are charismatic, proud, and love to be in the spotlight. They could be actors, politicians, or leaders. Their natural magnetism draws people to them, but their need for admiration can sometimes lead to arrogance.
Virgo (August 23 – September 22): Virgos are analytical, meticulous, and service-oriented. They might be a doctor, editor, or scientist. Their attention to detail is unparalleled, though they can be overly critical or perfectionistic.
Libra (September 23 – October 22): Libra characters are diplomatic, charming, and value harmony. They make great lawyers, diplomats, or artists. Their desire for balance and fairness is commendable, but their indecision can be frustrating.
Scorpio (October 23 – November 21): Scorpios are intense, passionate, and often mysterious. They might be detectives, psychologists, or researchers. Their depth and determination are their strengths, though their secretive nature can create trust issues.
Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21): Sagittarius characters are adventurous, optimistic, and philosophical. They could be travel writers, professors, or explorers. Their love for freedom and truth is inspiring, but their bluntness can sometimes be off-putting.
Capricorn (December 22 – January 19): Capricorns are disciplined, ambitious, and practical. They might be CEOs, engineers, or architects. Their work ethic and perseverance are admirable, though their rigidity can be a drawback. In my upcoming novel Ignited, Alex Harrington is a Capricorn!
Aquarius (January 20 – February 18): Aquarians are innovative, independent, and humanitarian. They could be scientists, activists, or inventors. Their vision for a better future is compelling, but their detachment can make them seem aloof.
Pisces (February 19 – March 20): Pisces characters are compassionate, artistic, and intuitive. They might be musicians, therapists, or writers. Their empathy and creativity are their gifts, though their tendency to escape reality can be problematic.
Applying Astrology to Your Characters
To effectively integrate astrology into your character development:
Choose a Sign: Start by selecting a zodiac sign that aligns with your character’s core traits. Consider how their element (Fire, Earth, Air, Water) influences their behavior and interactions.
Explore the Birth Chart: Delve deeper by examining the character’s sun, moon, and rising signs. The sun sign reflects their core personality, the moon sign their emotional nature, and the rising sign their outward behavior.
Conflict and Growth: Use the negative traits associated with the sign to create internal conflicts and opportunities for character growth. How do they overcome their weaknesses?
Interpersonal Dynamics: Consider how their sign interacts with others. What signs complement or clash with theirs? This can add layers to relationships and plotlines.
Conclusion
Using astrology to develop characters adds a layer of depth and realism that can make your stories more engaging and relatable. By understanding and incorporating zodiac archetypes, you can create characters that resonate with readers on a profound level. So next time you’re crafting a character, look to the stars for inspiration. You might just find the perfect traits to bring your characters to life. If you’re considering writing a book, I highly recommend this one- The Five Pillars of Astrology by Monique Wagner. Excellent book that is useful for creating characters, and if you believe in astrology, you’ll get a lot out of it personally.
Breathing New Life into Classic Tales: The Journey Behind “Making It Fierce”
When I sat down to write “Making It Fierce,” I knew I wanted to tap into the timeless magic of a story that has captivated hearts for generations: Beauty and the Beast. There’s something uniquely compelling about the transformative power of love, about two seemingly opposite individuals finding solace, strength, and passion in each other. This age-old tale served as the perfect inspiration for my novella, but with a fresh, modern twist that resonates with today’s readers.
Opposites Attract: Just like the Beast, Elijah Stevens is a character who hides from the world. Once a proud Marine, an accident left him physically and emotionally scarred. His journey is one of self-acceptance and finding the courage to step out of the shadows. Enter Lucas Crane, our modern-day Belle, whose bright spirit and unwavering curiosity set the stage for a romance that’s as healing as it is passionate.
Hurt/Comfort: A central theme in both stories is the delicate balance of hurt and comfort. Elijah’s tough exterior is a defense mechanism against a world he feels will only pity him. But Lucas, with his warmth and humor, slowly chips away at those defenses. Their love story is a testament to the healing power of genuine connection and understanding.
The Magic of Voice: Instead of enchanted roses and talking furniture, the magic in “Making It Fierce” lies in the characters’ voices. Elijah’s rich, soothing voice makes him a successful audiobook narrator, while Lucas’s engaging radio show personality draws people in. Their voices become a bridge, connecting them on a deep, emotional level long before they physically meet.
Breathing New Life into Classics: Reimagining a beloved classic like Beauty and the Beast into an LGBTQ romance was both exhilarating and challenging. The essence of the original—a love that sees beyond the surface—remains intact, but the journey and characters are crafted to reflect contemporary themes and diverse experiences. It’s a delicate dance of honoring the past while forging a path that feels fresh and relevant.
Writing “Making It Fierce” allowed me to explore the timeless themes of acceptance, transformation, and the power of love, but through a lens that speaks to today’s readers. It’s a reminder that even the oldest stories can find new life and meaning when viewed through a different perspective.

Enjoy a spicy sneak peak into Finn and Alex’s love story! To set the stage, Finn is on a “Bearacruz” in the middle of the Gulf Of Mexico. He’s met a stunning man who is going by an assumed name, Knox. (Yeah, a little mystery!) The following is chapter four, and it’s told from Finn’s POV.
“I want more than a kiss,” Knox murmured. “You are the sexiest man on this ship.”
I stepped into his arms, and a moment later, his lips crashed into mine.
Our kiss deepened while Knox’s hands roamed over my body, sending shivers down my spine. The surrounding ship seemed to fade away, leaving just the two of us lost in the heat of the moment. His touch was electric, igniting a fire within me that threatened to consume everything in its path. I felt his arms tighten around me, and for a split second, I wondered if this was all just a dream. But when his hand slipped into my pants and he gripped my ass, I knew it was real.
Knox broke the kiss, and I gasped for air. My cock was painfully hard, and I pressed it against his, and felt his thick shaft through his slacks.
“I’ve never done this before,” Knox breathed. “I mean, normally I prefer to get to know a guy better first. But I feel like this is right.”
“We’ve only got a few days together here on the ship.” I locked my gaze with his, and at that very moment, the light of the moon hit his face in just the right way. It was as if he’d transformed into a smoldering silent film star, with his hair slicked back and gleaming, and every angle of his face sharpened. “Let’s make the most of it, Knox. Because I want as much of you as I can get before it all ends.”
As Knox’s lips crashed into mine once again, I moaned, loving the rough feel of his beard against my skin. It was a sensation I couldn’t get enough of, and I never wanted this night to end.
But suddenly, a loud wolf whistle pierced through the air, causing me to jump and step away from Knox. Heat surged up my cheeks as I caught sight of a group of burly men leering at us from across the deck.
“Christ! This is way better than porn,” one remarked crudely while gripping his crotch.
The man next to him chimed in with a lascivious grin.”Bet the bearded hunk’s gotta huge cock.”
Knox sensed my discomfort and placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder before casting those dudes an icy stare. “Let’s find some privacy…my cabin?” His voice was low and seductive, making promises that his eyes echoed with equal fervor.
“Yes, please,” I murmured, then took his hand. “You know, normally I’d think it was kind of hot doing it in front of a bunch of strangers, but…”
“I’m selfish,” Knox interrupted, then as he led me away, he mumbled, “I don’t like to share.”
When we got to the elevators, I reached for the down button, but Knox hit the up button first.
“My suite is on the upper deck,” He murmured, and I realized he was still holding my hand. When the elevator doors opened, a group of drunk guys in skimpy swimsuits tumbled out, their intoxicated laughter echoing around us. We stepped inside, and as soon as the doors shut, the heat between us ignited. He pressed me against the cold steel wall, trapping me within the cage of his muscular arms.
Knox leaned down, his hot breath fanning across my face as he paused for a moment that lingered with delicious tension. His intense blue eyes locked onto mine, heavy with desire.
“God, I’ve never wanted anyone like this before,” he whispered, then he claimed my lips in a searing kiss that left no room for resistance. His mouth moved against mine with determined accuracy, each stroke of his tongue sending waves of desire pooling in my lower belly. There was nothing gentle in this kiss – it was raw and passionate, filled with pent-up lust and a simmering need that matched my own.
I heard a bell, then the doors opened and a drunk guy staggered onto the elevator. Knox and I stepped away from each other, and the drunk guy asked, “Did I interrupt something?”
Neither of us replied, and the man pushed three different floor buttons and leaned against the metal wall. “Which deck is the mixer on?”
Knox pushed the button for the main deck and glared at the guy. “Main deck, but are you sure you need anymore to drink?”
Drunk dude’s smile flatlined. “Sorry, but I…”
Knox held his hand up, and a moment later, the doors opened. He took my hand, and we got off, then he led me down a hallway. There were only four doors, which I thought was weird since the deck my cabin was on had many more than that. Upon reaching his door, he opened it, and upon entering, I was taken aback by the spaciousness of the room. Damn, this dude must’ve won the lottery or something, because you could fit at least ten of my cabin in just the living area.
“Wow, your suite is enormous,” I slowly turned around, taking it all in.
Knox chuckled, his deep voice vibrating through my body. “No one’s complimented me on the size of my suite before.”
My cheeks flushed as I realized how that could be interpreted. “Oh God, no, I meant the suite is big, not…”
He cut me off with another laugh. “Relax, Finn. I was just messing with you.”
I exhaled in relief and took a better look around the room. The living area had elegant decorations, including a plush white couch and chairs, a polished wood coffee table, and a large flat-screen TV mounted on the wall. The windows were floor-to-ceiling, offering a breathtaking view of the ocean.
“You have your own balcony, too?” I asked in awe.
“Yep,” Knox replied with a smirk. “Just wait till you see the rest of the place.”
He led me through a door to what appeared to be his bedroom. It was just as luxurious as the living area, with a king-sized bed draped in silky white sheets and fluffy pillows. A chandelier hung from the ceiling above it, giving off soft light.
“My goodness,” I breathed out.
Knox chuckled and stepped closer to me. “You can say that again.”
I rolled my eyes playfully and turned to explore the room further. There was another door that led to an en-suite bathroom, which was just as extravagant as everything else. Marble tiled floors, golden fixtures, and a massive bathtub caught my attention immediately.
“This is insane,” I said as I walked over to run my hand along the edge of the tub.
Knox wrapped his arms around my waist and nuzzled my neck. I leaned back into him and sighed. This whole situation still felt unreal to me—being on this cruise with someone like Knox, who seemed so out of my league.
“Let’s get naked and wet,” Knox whispered in my ear, and he reached around me and squeezed my erection through my pants. Then he backed away, so I turned around and saw him turn on the faucets in the bathtub. “Do you like champagne?” Knox cocked an eyebrow, waiting for my response. “I ordered some before I left to meet you. It should be ice cold by now.”
Jesus, champagne? Had I died and gone to a gay billionaire heaven?
“Normally I’m a beer kind of guy, but yeah, a little bubbly would be great.”
Knox put his hand under the running water, adjusted the temperature, then got to his feet. “Get in. I’ll be back in a minute.”
As I undressed and slipped into the warm water, my mind raced. Knox was so out of my league it was unreal, and I couldn’t believe how lucky I was. My heart pounded with desire as I squeezed my hard cock, thinking about what we were about to do, and all the nasty ways we could do it.
But I couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed by Knox’s extravagant lifestyle. The thought crossed my mind that maybe I didn’t belong here, that I wasn’t good enough for him. But I pushed those thoughts aside as Knox walked into the bathroom completely nude, carrying an ornate champagne bucket and two glasses.
I couldn’t take my eyes off of him as he poured us each a glass of champagne and got into the tub with me. His muscular body glistened under the soft light and his dark hair was no longer slicked back. Now it was perfectly mussy, and I realized his hair had a natural wave to it. He handed me a glass and raised his own in a toast.
“To being naked and wet,” he said with a devilish grin.
I clinked my glass against his.. Jesus, this entire experience felt like something out of a dream -too perfect to be real.
Knox leaned in closer to me, his chest almost touching mine as he took a sip of champagne. The bubbles tickled my nose as they went down, and I couldn’t resist reaching out to touch Knox’s smooth skin.
“You’re stunning,” I blurted out before even realizing what I was saying.
Knox bit his lower lip and set his glass down on the edge of the tub before taking mine from me as well. “As are you,” he whispered, leaning in for a kiss.
Knox’s lips were soft yet forceful against mine, and desire coursed through my body. My hands roamed all over his hard chest, feeling the definition of his muscles under the water. It was like touching a living, breathing work of art.
I pulled away from the kiss, needing to catch my breath and take in the sight in front of me. Intricate tattoos covered Knox’s pecs, seeming to tell a story. I traced my fingertips over them, mesmerized by their beauty.
“You’re so sexy,” I blurted out, unable to contain my admiration any longer.
Knox’s eyes sparkled with a mix of amusement and desire as he pulled me back into another intense kiss. Our bodies pressed against each other in the warm water, creating electric friction between us.
As we continued to kiss, our hands explored every inch of each other’s bodies. Then, with a splash, Knox flipped me in the water so I was covering his body with mine. My cock pressed against his girth, and suddenly I couldn’t breathe, because all I wanted was to taste him. I finally broke the kiss to catch my breath again, resting my forehead against Knox’s.
“Damn,” I whispered, feeling overwhelmed by everything that was happening between us. Never before in my life had I felt such intense lust for anyone. It was like Knox had cast a spell over me, forcing me to crave his touch, his words, his everything.
Knox combed his fingers through my wet hair. “You’re incredible,” he murmured, “and now I want more.” He placed his hands on my waist and physically turned me over again, then he scooted back and pulled me against him. I felt his hard cock against my lower back, throbbing, and one of his hands wrapped around my shaft.
“Oh my God,” I breathed, my eyes snapping shut. He squeezed it, then he slowly moved his fist up and down. “Am I dead? This can’t be real.”
“It’s real, baby,” Knox whispered, and I felt his lips on the back of my neck. “At least it better be, because there’s nowhere else I want to be than right here with you.”
Knox’s hand stroked up and down my shaft, sending waves of pleasure through my body. His lips were on my neck, whispering dirty words that made me squirm against him.
“You like that, baby?” Knox asked, his voice low and husky. “You like how I touch you?”
I could barely form coherent words as his hand continued to work me towards the edge. All I could do was nod and whimper in response.
“Tell me what you want,” he demanded, his breath hot against my skin. “You’re my slut, aren’t you?”
“Yes, Knox, I’m your fucking slut, and I’ll do anything you want.” My voice trembled, and I felt my cock grow even harder.
“You want, no baby, you fucking need my cock inside you.” Knox’s hand moved faster on my shaft. “When I make you come, and trust me, it will be more than once, you’ll scream my name. Now tell me what you truly desire, Finn.”
“I… I want to come,” I gasped.
Knox chuckled darkly. “Oh, you’ll come alright. But not yet.”
Before I could protest, Knox released his grip on me, and I groaned in frustration.
“Please,” I pleaded, arching my back towards him. “I’m a whore for you, Knox. Please, I…”
“Don’t worry, baby,” he whispered, pressing a kiss to the nape of my neck. “We’re just getting started.”
Let’s talk about sex…scenes. How do I turn up the heat on the page? Read on to find out.
Ever wondered what goes into writing those scenes that leave you hot under the collar? Today, I’m pulling back the curtain to give you a glimpse into my process for crafting steamy moments in my romance novels.
When I first began writing fiction, I started out by writing short erotica stories under the name Enrique Cruz. At the time I was still working a dreadful day job as a dispatcher for a locksmith company. I wrote on the bus rides to and from work, on my lunch breaks, even in bars. You can only imagine what it was like writing sex scenes on a crowded bus full of people. But I was determined to make it as a writer, so I forced myself to get past the embarrassment and just did it. Save your money. The stories I wrote under the pen name Enrique Cruz were horrible. But they served the purpose of erotica: they were sexually stimulating with little regard to actual plotting and character development.
Setting the Stage
For me, creating the perfect setting for a sex scene is essential. Whether it’s a moonlit beach, a cozy cabin, or a bustling cityscape, the location sets the mood and adds depth to the intimacy between my characters. And if they are well written, they further the romance in the most delicious ways possible.
For example, in my novella Making It Fierce, the main characters begin to have sex behind the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, under a magnolia tree. Yes, outdoor sex is fabulous, but normally most sex scenes begin and end in a bedroom. I had the MCs begin the sex outside as a means of showing how passionate they were feeling about each other, then they rushed home to the safety of Lucas’s apartment, and Elijah lost his virginity.
Why is Elijah’s virginity so important? Read on to find out.
Character Chemistry
But it’s not just about the setting—it’s about the chemistry between the characters. Before I even think about writing a sex scene, I spend time developing my characters’ relationships, ensuring that their connection is palpable and their desire for each other is undeniable.
With Elijah I wanted to show you, the reader, how intense Elijah’s emotions for Lucas were. Elijah had spent years hiding away in his grandmother’s basement because of scars on his face and scalp. He truly never thought he’d meet anyone who could see who he was on the inside. When he finally did, he made himself the most vulnerable he’d ever been, showing you how much he craved Lucas’s love.
It’s a must when writing sex scenes for your characters to have sizzling chemistry. If not, what’s the point of the romance? Nobody wants to read a sex scene that is limp from the start. Trust me on this.
Building Anticipation
One of the most thrilling aspects of writing romance is building anticipation. From flirtatious banter to stolen glances, I love creating tension that keeps readers on the edge of their seats, eagerly awaiting the moment when my characters finally give in to their desires.
In most of my novels, the main characters don’t do the nasty until they’ve developed feelings for each other. This usually means the sex takes place toward the end of a story, but that’s not always the case. In my upcoming novel Ignited, Finn and Alex are hitting the sheets on the high seas at the beginning of their love story. You’ll have to read the book to understand why I made that choice.
Emotional Connection
At the heart of every sex scene is emotion. Whether it’s longing, vulnerability, or pure passion, I strive to convey the depth of my characters’ feelings as they come together in intimate moments. I typically lean into vulnerability in sex scenes, where one or both of the MCs is making himself vulnerable to the other, and sharing part of himself he rarely does with anyone else.
Sensory Details
To bring my sex scenes to life, I rely on sensory details to immerse readers in the experience. The scent of a lover’s skin, the sound of their heartbeat, the taste of their kiss—each detail adds layers of richness to the scene.
Balancing Explicitness
Finding the right balance between explicit detail and subtle suggestion is key. While I want my scenes to be steamy and sensual, I also want to leave room for readers’ imaginations to fill in the blanks. With that being said, if I don’t have to stop and take a, um, break, in the middle of writing a sex scene, then I know it’s not very good. You’ll have to guess what I usually do on that break…
Personal Touch
Of course, every writer has their own approach to crafting sex scenes, and mine is no exception. From my unique writing rituals to the inspirations that fuel my imagination, I bring my own personal touch to every scene I write.
Challenges and Rewards
Writing sex scenes isn’t always easy, but the rewards are well worth the effort. There’s nothing quite like the satisfaction of creating a scene that resonates with readers on a deep, emotional level.
Conclusion
So there you have it—the secrets behind my steamy scenes. I hope this glimpse into my writing process has given you a newfound appreciation for the art of crafting romance. Until next time, happy reading!
